J. F. Ahern Co. has enjoyed over 125 years of succes, in large part because of its focus on employee development and promotion from within. The Company's "Ahern Academy" was created to provide training and development opportunities, enabling employees to sharpen their professional skills and make them more effective in their respective roles.

Training Formats
Most of Ahern Academy's training is available through on-the-job or web-based courses. Ahern Academy is a comprehensive program that offers training in a variety of areas, including:

  • Technical and/or job specific
  • Comprehensive leadership
  • Soft skills
  • Computer software 

Employees are encouraged to attend at least 32 hours of company-paid training each year.  

Training Culture
Ahern’s self-directed learning culture allows employees to learn at their own pace, within an agreed-upon time period, through "Learning Tracks", or course curriculums. The Ahern Academy web portal holds all of the Company's Learning Tracks and course information, allowing for repeatable, consistent training that is available at the employee’s fingertips. Ahern Academy provides employees the tools, support, and ability to apply their training to their own personal and career development plans.

Performance Appraisals
The time and effort that employees spend enhancing their professional skills through Ahern Academy are reflected in semi-annual performance appraisals. Our outcome-based appraisal system is designed to help employees achieve goals that will result in career growth. The process identifies strengths that will aid in an employee's professional advancement, as well as areas that should be improved upon.
