J. F. Ahern Co.'s Green Building Expansion Featured as Cover Story in PM Magazine
J. F. Ahern Co. was the feature of a cover story in nationally published PM (Plumbing & Mechanical) magazine's August issue. The article, titled "Practical Green", gave an overview of the environmentally friendly components incorporated into the Company's headquarters expansion, including the self-installed Greenwater Reclamation System, bathroom fixtures, HVAC Ice Storage System, radiant heating, and other mechanical systems. Ahern's expansion is pending a LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) Gold Certification from the U.S. Green Building Council, and offers the following efficiencies:
-Estimated 25% or $21,000 annual energy savings
-Reduced annual wastewater discharge of 26% or 25,000 gallons per year
-61% or 110,000 gallon per year reduction on potable water demand
-Diverted 1,200 tons of construction waste from landfills
-Recycled material usage totaling 20% of total material cost
J. F. Ahern Co. President and CEO Tripp Ahern was quoted in the article as saying, "The trend toward sustainability is obvious, and as a mechanical contractor we have a unique position to make a real impact. Our mechanical systems are at the hub of the energy and water consumption of any facility." Ahern uses its expansion as a showcase for its capabilities, and frequently guides customers on tours to discuss green mechanical components and options.
