Chapter 5 of NFPA 25 (Standard for the Inspection, Testing and Maintenance of Water-Based Fire Protection Systems), 2011 edition contains requirements for sample testing or replacement of fire sprinklers. As all fire sprinklers are not the same, requirements for sample testing or replacement vary, for example:

  • Fire sprinklers in service for 50 years shall be replaced, or sample tested (in accordance with NFPA 25), and repeated at 10-year intervals.
  • Fire sprinklers with fast-response elements in service for 20 years shall be replaced, or sample tested (in accordance with NFPA 25), and repeated at 10-year intervals.
  • Dry fire sprinklers in service for 10 years shall be replaced, or sample tested (in accordance with NFPA 25), and repeated at 10-year intervals.

NFPA 25 has other fire sprinkler replacement or sample testing requirements for sprinklers in more challenging environments such as very high ambient temperatures, corrosive atmospheres and corrosive water supplies.

Please refer to NFPA25 for all the requirements for fire sprinkler replacement or sample testing.
