Changes in Occupancy, Use, Process, or Materials Are The Owners Responsibility.
Did you know that anytime you change the layout, occupancy, use or process of an area or storage in your facility you need to evaluate the fire protection system’s capacity?
As a property owner or designated representative, it becomes your responsibility to evaluate the below factors per NFPA 25, 2011 edition.
“The evaluation shall consider factors that include, but are not limited to, the following:
- Occupancy changes such as converting office or production space into warehousing
- Process or material changes such as metal stamping to molded plastic
- Building revisions such as relocated walls, added mezzanines, and ceilings added below sprinklers
- Removal of heating systems in spaces with piping subject to freezing” (22.214.171.124, NFPA 25, 2011 edition).
This evaluation is a mandatory requirement of NFPA and is not to be considered part of the normal inspection, testing, and maintenance required by NFPA 25. A building owner needs to keep these requirements in mind before any changes take place in the building.
