Standpipe System Testing & Inspection Requirements per NFPA 25

Fp service technician

A standpipe system is a network of piping and hose connections designed to provide a reliable water supply for manual fire suppression by fire departments or trained personnel. To ensure system integrity, NFPA 25 establishes strict minimum requirements for annual inspections and five-year testing cycles. You can request an inspection on your standpipe system by reaching out to us here at J.F. Ahern.

Annual Standpipe Inspection Requirements

The annual standpipe inspection focuses on the physical condition of the system to ensure nothing hinders its operation during an emergency. This list highlights some of the key items addressed during the annual inspection, but you can also find the full list in the table that follows.

  • Hose connections are inspected annually to verify they are not damaged, leaking, or obstructed.
  • Cabinets and hose storage devices are inspected to ensure they are accessible and in good condition.
  • Hydraulic design information signage is inspected for presence and legibility.
  • Piping is inspected for any leaking or external corrosion.

5-Year Standpipe Testing Requirements

Every five years, more rigorous testing is required to verify the system’s integrity under pressure, ensuring that it will be ready when needed. Two of those requirements are detailed in this list, before you can once again see every item addressed in five-year testing in the table that follows.

  • Hydrostatic testing is performed on manual and semi-automatic dry standpipe systems, including Fire Department Connections (FDCs). Because FDCs are not normally under pressure, this test ensures they won’t fail when pressurized during a fire.
  • Flow testing is required for all automatic standpipe systems. This verifies that the required pressure and flow are available at the hydraulically most remote hose valve outlet while the system is under full demand.
    • In the event that the hydraulically most remote outlet is impractical, the Authority Having Jurisdiction (AHJ) must be consulted to determine the appropriate location to perform the test.
