Do Your Fire Extinguishers Qualify for an Annual Tag?

Did you know that while code requires fire extinguishers to be serviced annually, they cannot just be automatically tagged during the inspection? It is the technician’s responsibility at the time of service to ensure other criteria are met before a new tag is applied. Only then can one be assured that the unit is serviced per code and, most importantly, operational at time of use.
What Specific Items Would Prevent A Tag From Being Placed?
- Unit gauge is showing either under or over charged
- Unit is damaged and dented beyond manufacturer specs
- Unit is heavily rusted
- Parts of unit are missing, including hose, pull pin, or seal
- Unit is in need of code required interval testing detailed below

6-Year Internal Test
Per code, fire extinguishers must undergo internal service. The most common ABC-type, stored pressure units, must receive this at 6- and 12-year intervals. During the 6-year process, a qualified technician will empty the unit and remove all chemicals. All operating parts, including an internal stem and O-ring, will be replaced. The chemical previously removed will then be replaced, and the extinguisher tested. Lastly, the device will be verified as being in compliance for six years by the addition of a “6-year” label and verification collar around the neck of the unit, which signifies the service has been performed.
12-Year Internal Test
At 12 years, a more involved test must be performed. In addition to removing the chemical and replacing the internal parts like above, the shell must undergo hydrostatic testing to ensure it meets manufacturer specifications. This takes specialized equipment by trained personnel and ensures the structural integrity of the unit.
What Can You Do?
While annual inspections must be performed by certified professionals, monthly inspections do not require professional certification to complete. You can perform on your own, which is highly recommended, especially in larger commercial/industrial facilities where units may be susceptible to damage. Most fire extinguisher tags have monthly columns on the rear of the tag that allow one to initial each month the inspection is performed. Again, the items above, such as checking placement, gauge status, damage, rust, and missing parts, can be performed throughout the year between the annual inspections.
