Project Pre-Planning

Ensuring Project Success Through Strategic Planning and Communication

Ahern has been in business for 145 years and pre-planning projects has been at the forefront of our success. This process begins in the estimating phase when we “qualify” the project. This is when we determine the amount of risk versus reward, by asking ourselves several key questions: Have we performed this type of work in the past? Have we worked with this customer in the past? Have we performed well in this vertical market previously? What lessons learned can be applied to this project? What are the safety risks involved, and do we have the proper experience and resources available to execute the work? These questions, among others, help us make informed decisions about whether to pursue a project.

Once we have decided this is a project we would like to be involved with, we move on to the estimating phase. This is when we use our industry experience and historical data to create an effective plan and estimate that gives us the best chance to be awarded the project and ensure it will be a safe and successful project for Ahern. Pre-planning begins in the estimate phase of every project, and we leverage this as a competitive advantage to execute work better than our competition. We demonstrate to the prospective customer our ability to plan and perform the project successfully. We articulate this in conversations we have with the customers before and after we submit our proposals.

After we have been awarded the project, we have processes in place that ensure we are highly effective in the design, project management and installation phases of the project. These processes are the foundation of our success. By following these processes and effectively communicating with one another throughout the project, we have a greater chance of ensuring a safe environment for our employees while delivering a high quality and effective product that our customers are happy with. This, in turn, contributes to Ahern's long-standing success.

Project pre-planning is crucial for achieving a successful, cost-effective, and timely construction project that also has a significant positive impact on safety.

Key Advantages of Project Pre-Planning

  • Improved Efficiency - Pre-planning helps identify potential issues and bottlenecks early, allowing for smoother execution and reducing delays.
  • Cost Savings - By anticipating challenges and optimizing resource allocation, pre-planning can help avoid unnecessary expenses and keep the project within budget.
  • Risk Management - Identifying risks beforehand allows for the development of mitigation strategies, reducing the likelihood of costly surprises.
  • Enhanced Communication - Pre-planning ensures that all stakeholders are on the same page, fostering better collaboration and reducing misunderstandings.
  • Quality Control - Setting clear standards and expectations during the planning phase helps maintain high-quality work throughout the project.
  • Time Management - Detailed scheduling and timeline creation during pre-planning help ensure that the project stays on track and meets deadlines.
  • Resource Optimization - Efficiently allocating materials, labor, and equipment during pre-planning maximizes productivity and minimizes waste.

Key Safety Benefits of Project Pre-Planning

  • Hazard Identification and Mitigation - Pre-planning allows for the early identification of potential hazards, enabling the development of strategies to mitigate these risks before construction begins.
  • Improved Safety Protocols - By integrating safety considerations into the planning phase, construction teams can establish comprehensive safety protocols and ensure that all necessary safety measures are in place.
  • Enhanced Training and Awareness - Pre-planning includes scheduling safety training sessions for workers, ensuring they are well-informed about safety procedures and potential risks.
  • Efficient Resource Allocation - Allocating resources effectively during pre-planning ensures that safety equipment and materials are readily available when needed, reducing the likelihood of accidents.
  • Better Communication and Coordination - Pre-planning fosters collaboration among all stakeholders, including safety professionals, which enhances communication and ensures that everyone is aware of safety requirements.
  • Reduced Accidents and Incidents - By addressing safety concerns early and thoroughly, pre-planning helps minimize the occurrence of accidents and incidents on the construction site.

In conclusion, the key advantages and safety benefits of pre-planning are evident in our ability to manage risks, optimize resources, and maintain high standards of quality and safety. This approach not only enhances our professional performance but also contributes to our success in many of our personal endeavors.
