Are you interested in applying, but have questions?

Find the answers you need to apply to our frequently asked questions. Read through the questions we have outlined for you, but feel free to reach out if they were not answered. 

Q: How do I apply online?

Each job opening listed on our website has an "Apply Now" button located at the top right corner of the page. When you click on this button, you will be automatically directed to the application process. Proceed through each page of the application process by clicking "Next Step" after completing each section. You will know you have finished the application process when you receive the following message on your screen:

"Your resume/application has been successfully submitted. J. F. Ahern Co. will be following up with you via e-mail to inform you of your status. Please continue to check your e-mail for additional information."

Q: How often are job postings updated?

We are continually updating our postings as they become available.

Q: How do I know if a job has been filled?

As soon as an offer of employment has been accepted, the vacancy will be removed from our site.

Q: How do I know if you received my application?

You should receive an email acknowledgement within an hour of submitting your application.

Q: What happens to my application after I have submitted it online?

First it will be reviewed by one of our recruiters, and then we'll contact you by phone or email.

Q: How long after I have submitted my application should I expect a response?

In most cases, you should expect a response within two weeks.

Q: What can I expect from Ahern as an organization?

Q: What is the day-to-day culture like at Ahern?

Q: I’ve just graduated, what are my options?

We offer a range of roles for recent graduates across our business. There are opportunities across everything from corporate services to design and engineering.

Q: I’m still studying, what are my options?

That depends on what you would like to do in the future – you could wait until you graduate and join us, or you could start an apprenticeship.

The most sensible option would probably be to try an internship – that will let you experience working at Ahern while continuing your studies.

Q: I’m looking for an apprenticeship, what does Ahern offer?

We have a number of apprenticeships including: HVAC, Pipe Fabrication, Plumbing & Steamfitting, Sheet Metal, and Sprinkler Fitting. All will give you the skills and training to begin a professional career alongside industry experts.

Q: What are the benefits of working at Ahern?

Q: Can I apply for more than one position at a time?

You can apply for more than one role; however our application system can only accept one application at a time. So if you want to apply for more than one position, you'll simply need to apply for each one individually.

Q: I would like to apply, but no current openings interest me. Can I still submit my application?

If there are no vacancies that interest you, please join our Talent Network. You will receive regular updates on job postings that pertain to your desired location and position.

Q: Are all of Ahern’s current job openings listed online? Even internship, apprenticeship, and union positions?

Yes – our corporate, internship, and sprinkler fitter apprentice positions are listed in our job openings on the website. Apprenticeships other than sprinkler fitters can be found under the apprenticeships portion of our career page. Union positions other than apprenticeships are recruited for through their respective union halls.

Q: After I have submitted my application, how can I contact the Recruiter or hiring manager for the position(s) I applied for?

Unfortunately, due to the large number of job openings we advertise, it isn't practical for us to supply the contact information of our Recruiters. However, if your application is of interest, the Recruiter will contact you.

Q: What do people enjoy most about working for Ahern?

Everyone takes something different from their experience at Ahern, but there are some themes that appear regularly – the collaborative culture, a lack of red tape, autonomy and the ability to make decisions quickly. There are a lot of opportunities for advancement and the business is innovative in finding ways to provide this, whether through promotion or project specific work.

Q: What are the opportunities for growth?

Ahern breeds a culture of fluidity. You can start in one position and move laterally or upward within the overall organization. We foster a culture of learning and development along with providing assistance for continuous education. We also encourage and financially support development activities such as professional certifications, seminars, and professional membership fees.

Q: What onboarding is provided for new employees entering the organization?

Onboarding includes team introductions, facilities tours, and HR facilitated orientations including company history and future vision along with detail on benefits. Thereafter, the process becomes specific to each position and business unit and is developed and facilitated by that team.

There is also a quarterly orientation that includes management committee panel discussions, shop tours, and development components.

Q: Does Ahern offer ongoing training?

Yes, you'll be offered ongoing on the job training and skill development training as you evolve in your position and as your career progresses.

Q: What is the working environment (working hours, flexibility, team atmosphere, physical setup)?

Working Hours: Our standard business hours are 7:30-4:30pm; however, Ahern does provide flexibility and understands that "life happens". Employees can work with their manager on flexible scheduling or remote work in some scenarios.

Tools and Resources: We provide you with all of the necessary tools and resources you would need to be the most effective in your role and are open to suggestions if there are things needed that could drive further efficiency.

Team Atmosphere: We're family-owned, with a small office feel but the backing of a large organization and support structure. It's a collaborative environment that drives teamwork.

Physical Setup: Physical layout and setup is dependent on your position and location. This is something unique to each Ahern location so make sure you ask more about this!

Q: What is the management leadership style and makeup of the team?

This varies across the business, but in general it is a non-hierarchal, open-door environment. We believe in collaboration and mutual support.

Q: How long will my application be kept on file?

Once submitted, your application will remain in our applicant database indefinitely. However, we only consider applicants who have specifically applied for a position. If you are interested in a new position that has opened after you’ve submitted an application, please apply for that position separately.

Q: What should I prepare before I begin my online application?

You should have an electronic copy of your resume to attach or copy and paste into your application.

Q: Do you offer college co-ops and internships?

While it isn't common practice and hasn't been established in other business units, we have done co-ops in Fab and probably will continue the program. 

Q: I submitted my application online, but can I apply again or mail/fax a copy to ensure you received it?

Once you submit your application online and receive the confirmation of receipt via e-mail, you can be assured we have received your resume. Submitting it again is not necessary and will not increase your chances of being selected for the position.

In fact, multiple submissions from one applicant for a position may slow the recruiting process. As such, we request and recommend you submit your application for a position only once.

Q: Does Ahern accept paper applications?

No. All our applications are kept in an online database, and must be submitted online.

Q: Why can’t I submit my resume via U.S. Mail or fax?

Once you submit your application online and receive the confirmation of receipt via email, you can be assured we have received your resume. We ask that you do not re-send your resume to us via mail or fax after you have submitted it online. Doing so will not increase your chances of being selected for the position.

In fact, multiple submissions from one applicant for a position may slow the recruiting process. As such, we request and recommend you submit your application for a position only once.

Q: What if I don’t have an e-mail address?

Since we do not accept paper applications, we highly recommend that you set up an e-mail address through one of the free internet services so you can submit your resume online.

Q: Will my application be considered for positions other than the one I applied for?

No. Your application will only be considered for the position you have applied for. To be considered for multiple positions, you should apply to each one individually.

Q: In what formats can I save my resume document to attach to my application?

We accept Microsoft Word (.doc), plain text (.txt) or PDF documents. In addition, the title name of the document must not include any parentheses ( ), periods, commas, or other special characters.

Q: What is Ahern’s Recruiting Process?
  • Application is submitted online for the position(s) of interest.
  • Application is received into online applicant database and reviewed by recruiter.
  • Recruiter will contact applicant via phone or email if he/she is interested in conducting a phone interview.
  • Phone interview will be conducted.
  • If there is continued interest in the applicant, an in-person interview will be scheduled.
  • Testing is conducted based on position applied for.
  • A second in-person interview may be conducted for final candidates.
  • References are conducted on the final candidate. An offer is extended to the final candidate and an email offer letter is sent.
  • Drug screens and background checks are performed on the final candidate upon acceptance of an offer.
  • Regret letters are sent via e-mail to candidates who were not chosen for the position.
