Charter Street Heating Plant
Pipe Fabrication Services for Heating Plant in Madison, Wisconsin
Ahern provided prefabricated steam boiler and cooling water piping to the Charter Street Heating Plant (CSHP) in Madison, Wisconsin, which delivers heating and cooling to the UW campus and also generates electricity. On-time deliveries were vital, as the plant needed to be operational before the cold Wisconsin winter set in. Ahern handled the tight schedule, and provided additional value by pre-welding supports to certain spools as needed, saving the customer valuable on-site installation time.
Ahern’s design for this newly constructed 1,000,000 square-foot multi-use building in Madison, Wisconsin was approved by the regulatory agency on the first submission. In addition, all seven of the field crew members were industry certified or licensed. Ahern’s ability to meet the aggressive schedule allowed the owner to lease out its space early.
Ahern’s expertise and communication reduced the risk of the Madison, Wisconsin U-Haul warehouse’s owner representative, who worked offsite from his Arizona office. Serving as prime contractor in the retrofit of this 60,000 square-foot facility, Ahern’s preplanning, coordination with local regulatory authorities, and prefabrication efforts greatly improved the project’s success. All work was completed on time, and well under budget.
Ahern has completed multiple projects at Luminex, a biological testing technology facility in Madison, Wisconsin. The main project involved HVAC, fire protection, and special hazards installations, including multiple rooftop HVAC units, two laboratory exhaust fans, and a special hazards FM200 system. Success on that job led to additional opportunities, including the installation of a liquid desiccant unit to pull the moisture out of Luminex’s product room and achieve 20-25% relative humidity.
Wingra Family Medical Center
Ahern’s design/build background was the grounds for this fire protection and HVAC project in Madison, WI. The 80,000 square-foot, 4-story medical facility exceeded the owner’s schedule with the use of Ahern’s prefabrication process. Ahern prefabricated 950 sheet metal spools on 68,000 pounds of ductwork, plus 730 sprinkler heads. The field crew installed the ductwork before the stud walls were placed, which reduced the amount of material handling on the job site.
Promptness was pivotal for Ikaria’s new 60,000 square-foot healthcare facility in Madison, Wisconsin. Because field work wasn’t continuous on this project, Ahern’s team reacted with manpower on one or two days’ notice when the construction schedule was accelerated. To speed up the process, Ahern’s prefabrication shop was utilized to fabricate 500 linear feet of piping for the NFPA certified medical gas system, consisting of oxygen and medical air. Another factor that contributed to Ahern’s timely completion included a rough-in of medical gas outlets to keep the drywall on schedule.
