Multi-Trade Modular Prefabrication Services
Multi-Trade ModularServices
Installation of prefabricated mechanical, electrical, and plumbing systems can require meticulous attention to detail and precise coordination with multiple trades. Multi-trade prefabrication of racking systems, skids, bathroom pods, and modules allows multiple mechanical components to be constructed in an offsite temperature-controlled environment. Our multi-trade modular prefabrication services include a Pipe Fabrication Shop, Plumbing Fabrication Shop, Sheet Metal Fabrication Shop, Industrial Services Fabrication Shop, and Fire Protection Fabrication Shop. Offsite modular prefabrication also eliminates the buildup of materials onsite allowing more trades to work productively and significantly reducing material-handling time.
If your construction company isn’t yet taking full advantage of offsite multi-trade prefabrication services, you’re leaving money on the table. And, in an industry with notoriously thin margins and stiff competition, that’s a serious situation.
Most likely, this isn’t news to you. Offsite multi-trade modular prefabrication isn’t a brand-new development in the construction world. It is, however, more practical and cost-effective than ever before. If you’ve considered incorporating it into your workflow in the past, but couldn’t justify the cost of setting it up or the effort of outsourcing it to another company, it’s time to look again. And, if you’ve never tried it before, now is definitely the time to learn why offsite prefabrication is a game-changer for your firm.
Since 2022, we've completed over 5,900 HVAC and plumbing construction projects.
Ahern is a very good contractor, and we've used their services at many of our facilities. Their quality keeps us coming back, as we never lose any sleep when Ahern is on board.

The Benefits of Multi-Trade Prefabrication

INCREASED SAFETY
Welding is performed at a more ergonomic level with superior lighting and ventilation. A clean, organized workplace with ample room reduces tripping hazards and enhances safety.

ENHANCED QUALITY
Typical onsite construction activities are conducted in a temperature-controlled facility with 360 degree of accessibility to multi-trade components.

LOWER LABOR COSTS
Offsite construction minimizes trade bottlenecks, reducing and eliminating overtime and off-hour wages.

WASTE ELIMINATION
Reduced scrap by ordering components to exact lengths, minimizing waste, and lowering material, handling, and transportation costs.

OVERALL FACILITY IMPROVEMENT
Reduce above ceiling “clutter” with prefabricated racking systems

Why Offsite Prefabrication?
The concept of building “modules” at offsite facilities and shipping them to the jobsite for installation isn’t new. However, in most circumstances, it wouldn’t save time or money over the course of a job. Communication gaps between the blueprints everyone was using and what was happening at the jobsite led to costly rework.
To ensure a given pipe or conduit fits exactly where it needs to, tolerances need to be as tight as 1/32 of an inch — or tighter for some jobs. Any jobsite changes brought into question whether the prefabricated module was going to fit, leaving welders and pipefitters to improvise solutions, or the prefab pieces had to be scrapped and completely remade.
So, what has changed?
With instant updates to plans and advancements in 3D modeling, mobile tech, and augmented reality, all stakeholders stay aligned in real time. This has eliminated the communication gap and reduced lag time, ensuring prefabricated modules fit as intended.
As a result, modular prefabrication has shifted from a “nice to have” option to a “must have”. With the practical challenges met, offsite manufacturing saves time and money, improves quality, and makes the whole job easier and more efficient.

Where Offsite Prefabrication Outperforms Onsite
There are three main ways offsite manufacturing accomplishes these benefits. Compared to traditional onsite methods, prefabricating modules offsite is faster, more efficient, and of higher quality:

FASTER
Larger, automated, faster, and higher quality tools in one place with more room to stock sufficient spare parts reducing machine downtime and project delay.

MORE EFFICIENT
Reduces the need for onsite labor, freeing up space for other workers to do their jobs, while enabling more efficient job scheduling by producing modules and spools at a fixed rate.

HIGHER QUALITY
Offsite QQ/QC testing ensures a higher-quality product, while inspectors and regulators can conduct efficient pre-shipment inspections.
What We Do
Ahern has the unique ability to manage a combination of pipe spools, mechanical, plumbing, and electrical systems within modular prefabrication projects. Prefabricated modules have been used successfully in healthcare facilities and more. Specific applications include prefabricated skids, prefabricated racks, and prefabricated bathroom pods.
Our actual project costs have averaged within 2.6% of the original estimates for the last 5 years.
I was very pleased with Ahern’s workmanship and schedule. Everything was done on time and within the budget.
