Cross Connection Survey & Backflow Testing

Cross Connection &Backflow Prevention

Plumbing systems are a vital part of any building's infrastructure, ensuring the safe and efficient delivery of water for a wide range of uses. One of the primary concerns in water safety is the risk of cross connections. Cross-connection surveying and regular inspections of backflow prevention devices are essential to safeguarding public health and maintaining a safe water supply.

In the last 18 months, we have completed almost 6,600 mechanical PM inspections.

"Whenever your technicians come to any of our facilities, I know the job is going to be done well, and they look over everything. Other companies want to get in and get out as fast as possible. Thank you for showing that you care about what you do."

Cross Connection Survey

A cross connection is a link between the potable water supply and a non-potable source where contaminants can potentially enter the clean water. A cross-connection survey is a walk-through of the water-system piping in a building, starting at the water source and ending at the last free-flowing tap. This survey is crucial for maintaining water quality and ensuring public health by preventing the contamination of drinking water.

Each facility will receive a letter from their municipality for a required cross-connection survey to be completed every 2-6 years depending on your type of business and hazard.

Components of a cross-connection survey include:

  1. Inspection and Identification: Ahern’s certified professionals will inspect your building’s plumbing system to locate cross connections. Common areas of concern include fire sprinklers, irrigation systems, boilers, laboratory equipment, etc.
  2. Risk Assessment: Each identified cross connection is evaluated based on the type and severity of potential contaminants.
  3. Evaluation of Backflow Prevention Devices: All existing backflow prevention assemblies at cross connection points will be inventoried and evaluated.
  4. Recommendations: Suggest appropriate measures to eliminate or control identified cross connections. Schedule annual maintenance inspections to prevent future cross connections and ensure water safety.
  5. Documentation: Provide detailed documentation, including the location and classification of cross connections, the status of backflow prevention measures, and recommended actions.

Regular cross-connection surveys are essential for protecting water quality and public health. Contact Ahern today for your next cross-connection survey to prevent potential risks and ensure your plumbing system is code-compliant.

Backflow Preventer Testing

Backflow prevention stops the reverse flow of water or other substances into potable water sources. This is crucial in preventing contamination of drinking water, which can occur if non-potable water or other contaminants are allowed to flow backward into the clean water system, typically when there are changes in water pressure.

Backflow prevention devices are installed to prevent contaminated water from entering the potable water system. Per the State of Wisconsin administrative plumbing code, a performance test shall be conducted at the time of installation, after any repairs, and at least annually, and by a licensed Cross Connection Control Tester. Upon completion, Ahern will submit the performance test results to the State of Wisconsin as required.

Ahern’s technicians are licensed and highly experienced in performing these inspections and can identify potential issues early, helping to prevent damage and avoid costly repairs.
