Fire Protection System Inspection & Testing

Fire Protection Preventive MaintenanceEquipment Inspection & Testing

Our fire sprinkler systems inspectors undergo a minimum of 720 hours of coursework and 9,500 hours of on-the-job training prior to performing any inspections. This ensures they carry the code and system knowledge needed to keep your systems functioning properly. We service all types of fire sprinkler systems in all sorts of facilities with our fire protection preventive maintenance program.

Last year, we completed over 28,000 sprinkler inspections.

As one of the largest hospitals in the area, we are under a greater amount of scrutiny from regulatory bodies to comply with multiple agency fire inspection standards. Ahern's team has a very profound understanding of sprinkler system codes, greater than we've been exposed to in the past. Their ability to demonstrate our compliance is a breath of fresh air.

Stay Inspection-Ready, Code-Aligned, & Risk-Reduced All Year Long

Fire protection and life safety isn’t a “set it and forget it” scope, it’s a year-round obligation tied to adopted fire codes, NFPA standards, and the way your local AHJ enforces them. A Fire Protection & Life Safety Preventive Maintenance Agreement keeps you continuously inspection-ready by scheduling the right ITM activities at the right intervals, maintaining audit-ready records, and resolving deficiencies early, before they turn into failed inspections, unplanned downtime, or elevated risk.

Fire Protection & Life SafetyPreventive Maintenance Agreement

Your agreement is built around the systems you select and the code intervals that apply to your facility type, but commonly includes:

Fire Sprinkler

Sprinkler & Water-Based Fire Protection (NFPA 25-based ITM)

  • Full-scope ITM for wet, dry, preaction/deluge, foam, antifreeze loops, standpipes, hydrants, fire pumps, and backflow preventers (as applicable)—performed by specialized, safety-first teams who understand how these systems are evaluated in the field.
  • Main drain and operational testing, valve supervision/tamper verification, and device/component condition checks, paired with disciplined documentation that supports AHJ conversations, insurance needs, and internal audits.
  • Annual fire pump flow testing (when included), plus routine run availability and controller documentation options, supported by Ahern’s ability to move from testing to correction quickly when issues are found.

Fire Alarm Systems (NFPA 72-based ITM)

  • Point-to-point testing and functional verification of initiating devices, notification appliances, power supplies, batteries, and alarm/supervisory/trouble signals, completed with clear site coordination to minimize disruption.
  • Smoke detector sensitivity testing (as applicable) with reporting tailored to your facility type (including healthcare considerations when needed) backed by Ahern’s codes-and-standards support to keep reports consistent and inspection-ready across sites.

Special Hazards (NFPA 2001/12/16/72 and related)

  • Inspection/testing for clean agent and suppression systems (FM-200, Novec 1230, CO₂, foam), detection (VESDA, linear heat), releasing circuits, and sequence of operations, verified end-to-end so the system performs as designed, not just on paper.
  • Container checks (weight/pressure as applicable), piping/nozzle review, integration verification, and operator refresher training options, plus in-house repair/upgrade capability to resolve deficiencies faster and reduce risk windows.

Fire Extinguishers (NFPA 10-based ITM)

  • Annual inspections plus required 6-year/12-year maintenance tracked with consistent, audit-ready records across locations.
  • Hazard assessment to align extinguisher type and placement with real conditions so coverage matches the risk profile, not a generic template.
  • Inventory support and documentation, with budgeting projection options, helpful for multi-site consistency and lifecycle planning.

Pre-Engineered Systems (kitchen hoods, paint booths, vehicle systems)

  • NFPA 17A / 96 and manufacturer-required ITM delivered with tight coordination around access, safety, and operational constraints.
  • Detection testing, shutdown verification, tank inspection, fusible link replacement, and alarm interface verification (as applicable) with the advantage of having one partner who can inspect, document, and execute repairs/upgrades when needed.

Optional add-ons

  • Training (hands-on, tailored programs) to strengthen readiness and reduce avoidable issues.
  • Monitoring coordination (when applicable) to support faster notification and response alignment.
  • Deficiency repair/upgrade packages + long-term lifecycle planning, leveraging Ahern’s in-house capabilities and program reviews to reduce repeat findings and keep systems inspection-ready year over year.
