Cool Port - Port of Oakland

Expertise leads tosuccessful completion

AFP-National was awarded the fire protection and fire detection work for Cool Port, located at the Port of Oakland in Oakland, California. Cool Port is described as the world’s latest next-generation cold storage and logistics facility, specifically handling cargo like fresh meat and fruit. Set on 25 acres and spanning an impressive 283,465 square feet, Cool Port can process more than a million tons of product annually. In total, Cool Port hosts 90 truck dock positions and 18 rail car positions, and has the capability to process up to 36 rail cars per day. The use of direct rail car-to-container loading eliminates truck transfers, which is commonplace in standard temperature-controlled facilities. The use of the rail car slashes air pollution and CO2 emissions. The actual placement of Cool Port is no accident either; it is placed strategically near the marine terminal to expedite the ship-to-warehouse transition.

The goal of Cool Port is to grow the United States’ national exports to customers throughout Asia with products such as high quality, Midwest-grown pork and beef, and California meat and produce as well.

Ahern’s National team was the design-build fire protection contractor and provided fire protection as well as fire detection with the assistance of the Fire Systems & Equipment (FSE) team. Ten total systems were included in this project: (4) Quell™ Double Interlock Preaction Systems, Linear Heat Detection Systems, (4) dry systems for the Cross Docks, and (2) wet systems for offices and support spaces. A 2,500 GPM @ 145 PSI fire pump and a massive water storage tank were also included in this work. In total, 2,715 sprinkler heads were installed throughout Cool Port.
