PFAS is a highly effective surfactant, which means that when it interacts with water, it lowers the surface tension of the water and allows it to spread much more quickly. But despite its effectiveness, PFAS is now being rapidly phased out.

After learning about the impending changes, Marshfield Utilities, based in Marshfield, Wisconsin, contacted Ahern to start budgeting to convert their system. Their goal was to eliminate all trace contaminants of PFAS from their fuel-loading canopy site. The project moved ahead after Ahern, serving as the primary contractor, walked them through the process and provided several options, ultimately delivering a turnkey solution.

Ahern was responsible for designing, prefabricating, demolishing, installing, and testing the new system. Subcontracting with a waste disposal partner ensured the AFFF concentrate was disposed of properly. This included coordinating with the Marshfield Fire Department to assist in transporting the contaminated concentrate to the Department of Natural Resources (DNR). Marshfield achieved budget savings by utilizing a state program to take and dispose of the concentrate.

After nearly six months of careful planning, collaboration, and testing, the contaminated piping and liquids were contained, packaged, and disposed of. The team successfully installed the new piping in under a week.
