UW-Madison Tunnel 18

Qualityassurance

Industrial Process & Piping Services for Public Utilities in the Madison Area

Ahern served as prime contractor for the University of Wisconsin on the modernization and repair of an existing steam utility tunnel. The team installed steam expansion joints, replaced 100+ year old pipe supports and anchors, replaced sections of deteriorating piping, and removed unused pipe and supports. Logistics were difficult, as all work was performed underground on the UW campus, with the only tunnel access being through 3' x 3' hatches. Everything that went underground or came up had to be moved by hand.

Ahern’s AWS-certified welders created quality welds on the renovated high-pressure, high-temperature steam lines. The University’s trust in Ahern’s quality was evident, as the location of the work prohibited pressure testing in advance of activating the systems.
